He said that the Delhi government has written to the Irrigation Department of Haryana for the second time in a week asking it to release excess water in the Yamuna so that the water supply in the capital is not disrupted.
Drop-in water level
The water level of the Wazirabad barrage fell to an alarming level of 672.30 feet from the normal level of 674.5 feet on Wednesday morning, an official said. Haryana supplies 61 million gallons of water to Delhi through two canals – the Carrier-Lined Channel (CLC) and the Delhi Sub-Branch (DSB).

How much water do you get from where?
Water is supplied to CLC and DSB from Hathini Kund through Munak Canal and Bhakra Beas Management Board. Apart from this, Delhi gets 253 million gallons of water daily from Uttar Pradesh through the Upper Ganga Canal. Apart from these, 9 million gallons of water come from wells and reservoirs of the capital. Another official said that due to the low water level in Wazirabad pond and less flow in CLC, the operational capacity of several water treatment plants including Chandrawal, Wazirabad, Haiderpur, Nangloi, and Dwarka has reduced.

According to government data, Delhi needed 1,380 MGD of water in 2021, while the Delhi Jal Board could supply only 950 MGD of water. The Meteorological Department has predicted above normal temperature in the month of May as well.
