Rules for SIM card will change from July 1! Know the details

SIM card rules: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced revisions to the mobile number portability laws to counteract the abuse of the MNP service in India, which is responsible for SIM swap frauds. As per the latest regulations, if your SIM card is lost, stolen, or damaged and you have replaced it with a new one, you will be unable to switch that number to another provider for the following seven days.

The regulations will take effect on July 1.

According to TRAI, the Department of Telecom (DoT) was consulted throughout the creation of these new regulations, and several businesses were also consulted. It is important to remember that these new regulations will take effect on July 1.

There won’t be a unique porting code available.

“These changed rules are to prevent fake SIM swaps or attempts by fraudsters to port mobile numbers linked to SIM changes,” TRAI stated in an explanation of why the regulations governing mobile number porting were altered. Moreover, TRAI has stated that an additional security regulation has been made. ‘Unique Porting Code’ (UPC) will no longer be issued by telecom operators seven days following a SIM change or SIM purchase. To port a mobile number, clients must first send a message to their current telecom provider in order to receive an 8-digit code known as a UPC.

TRAI did not address how individuals

were abusing outdated regulations and committing fraud, although numerous reports indicate that the majority of SIM swap frauds happen while transferring the mobile number to another company (mobile number portability) and getting a new SIM. You have the option to move your cellphone number to a different provider if you’re not satisfied with your current provider; this is known as mobile number portability (MNP). However, it appears that scammers were abusing the previous MNP regulations. TRAI recently modified the MNP regulations as a result.
