Why is Sharad Purnima celebrated?
On the night of Sharad Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi visits the earth. The Goddess inquires of all those present, “Who is awake?” (Kojagar puja). Those who worship Goddess Lakshmi at night are showered with wealth. The night of Sharad Purnima is when the legendary Raas Leela (Ras Purnima) was performed between Krishna and the gopis of Braj. On this night, Krishna performed such a Raas that even Shiva could not stop himself and reached there in the form of a gopi to see the divine dance. It is said that by worshipping Krishna on this day, all kinds of sorrows are removed.
What role does Kheer play in Sharad Purnima?
On Sharad Purnima, the moon is larger than usual and is thought to have therapeutic qualities. The moon’s rays cause Amrit (nectar) to rain. For this reason, rice and cow milk pudding are customarily created on this day and left under the moon for the whole night, allowing the moon’s healing and celestial qualities to seep into the pudding. White objects are associated with the Moon and the planet Venus, hence eating rice milk pudding in a silver vessel on this day also increases the Moon and the planet Venus in the horoscope.
