WhatsApp is developing new controls for iPhone users that would let them choose which audio messages to be transcribed and when, according to a report by WABetaInfo.

Up until now, every voice message’s transcription has been shown automatically when this feature is enabled. However, with this latest version, users will have the choice to either manually select which audio messages they wish to have transcribed or have the transcription of every voice message provided to them automatically.

There will be a new button in manual mode.

A new button will appear in the voice message bubble when the user selects manual mode. He can obtain the transcription of that specific voice message by pressing this button.

Security and privacy

Additionally, according to the rumor, this feature is being developed for iPhones running iOS 16 and later. Like every other WhatsApp feature, end-to-end encryption is supported. Regarding privacy, Apple’s on-device language models are used for transcription rather than uploading user voice communications to an external server.

Regarding the feature’s availability, the source indicates that some beta users have already been able to use it using Apple’s TestFlight program, and more beta users might be able to do so in the days ahead. The company has not yet stated when all customers will be able to access this service, though.
