Google I/O 2025: Beam teases 3D video calls.

Google introduced Beam at Google I/O 2025. This is a brand-new method for 3D video conferences. Beam is the new name for the project that was once known as Project Starline. With AI and 3D photography it brings virtual meetings to life. It is compatible with Google Meet and Zoom and operates on Google Cloud. Let’s learn more about it.

The company formally unveiled Beam, a new 3D video conferencing technology that simulates in-person meetings, at Google I/O 2025. Beam, formerly known as Project Starline, is now transitioning from the research stage to the operational stage. People who are far away from you can appear full-size and in depth, as if they were sitting in front of you, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), 3D imaging, and customized displays. It attempts to replicate natural eye contact, gestures, and presence like in-person conversation without the need for headsets or glasses.

This is how it operates.

Beam transforms ordinary video into 3D pictures that can be viewed from various perspectives using artificial intelligence. It facilitates genuine connections by capturing body language, voice tones, and subtle facial expressions that are sometimes overlooked during standard video chats. You don’t need to make any changes to get started because the platform is compatible with a company’s current tools and operates on Google Cloud.

In partnership with HP, which will introduce the first Beam devices later this year, Google is introducing Beam to offices. The forthcoming InfoComm event will feature demonstrations of these devices. In order to enable teams to participate in Beam calls without switching software, Google intends to integrate Beam with popular video platforms like Zoom and Google Meet.

Additionally, Google is working with businesses like Zoom, Diversified, and AVI-SPL to extend Beam to other organizations. This technology is already being tested by well-known businesses like Duolingo, Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, and Hackensack Meridian Health. According to Deloitte Consulting’s managing director, Angel Ayala, Beam represents “not only a technological breakthrough, but a new way of connection.”

Additionally, Google is expanding its video capabilities to include live speech translation. The capability will eventually make its way to Beam, beginning with Google Meet. This function enables multilingual chats while preserving the original tone and voice with real-time translations. International meetings may become clearer and more intimate as a result.

Google hopes that Beam will make video calls more realistic in terms of people’s connections and interactions, not just how they appear. As Beam spreads to businesses worldwide, more changes are anticipated in the upcoming months.
