In this instance, the penalty is Rs 1000.
The highest penalty for taxpayers reporting their ITRs after the deadline of a financial year is Rs 1,000 if their income is Rs 5 lakh or less. For late filing of taxes, individuals earning over Rs 5 lakh in the fiscal year 2023–2024 may be subject to a fine of up to Rs 5,000. The Income Tax Department continually reminds people to file their ITRs on time because of this.
