If there is a ration shop near your house and you are getting a subsidized ration from here or taking advantage of the free ration scheme run under the government scheme, then this news is useful for you. These shops filled with wheat and rice are often in old settlements. But now the government is planning to makeover these shops to sell Dairy & FMCG. Its plan has also been prepared by the central government. It is to be started in UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Telangana under the pilot project.
Under the pilot initiative,
it will begin in Telangana, UP, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. These four states will host the pilot project’s implementation. A trial effort to transform 60 ration stores into “Jan Poshan Kendras” in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Telangana has been started by Food Minister Pralhad Joshi. The project’s goal is to increase the feasibility of FPS and the availability of nutritious food items. FPS is also commonly known as a government ration shop. Under the pilot project, FPS dealers will be allowed to diversify their products apart from subsidized grains to Dairy & FMCG products.
In addition to the food, other necessities will be supplied.
Following the renovation, these stores are now able to offer dairy goods, millet, lentils, and other everyday essentials. For the dealer, this will be a new stream of revenue. Joshi stated that this modification will benefit all parties during the project’s inauguration program. He mentioned the existing operational inefficiencies, pointing out that ration shops are closed the remainder of the time in some places and only open for 8–9 days in others, while some facilities only open once every three months.
In the entire nation, there are roughly 5.38 lakh ration stores.
The minister emphasized that the current system’s compensation to the dealer operating the ration shop is insufficient. In such a situation, alternative ways are needed to use the shop space and manpower more effectively. On this occasion, Joshi also introduced the updated version of the ‘Mera Ration’ app. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra talked about the collaborative efforts with SIDBI to facilitate easy loans for FPS dealers and the partnership with the Ministry of Skill Development to provide entrepreneurship training. There are about 5.38 lakh ration shops across the country.
