Kerala Health Minister: COVID Hits Elderly Harder

In the state, there are 2,223 current cases, and 96 patients are receiving treatment. 431 Covid-19 cases were reported in the Ernakulam district, 426 in Kottayam, and 365 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George has stated that extra caution should be exercised because the disease is still more severe in older people and people with other illnesses, despite a rise in Covid-19 cases.

The most prevalent Omicron JN.1 variations in Kerala, she continued, were LF.7 and XFG. Despite being “not as severe,” these variations have a significant chance of spreading the illness.

“When traveling and in public settings, masks should be worn. The Covid-19 variation is being identified using genomic sequencing. The most prevalent Omicron JN.1 variants in Kerala are LF.7 and XFG, which are spreading throughout Southeast Asia. Despite being less severe, these variations have a great potential for disease transmission, according to the ministry.

“At the moment, the state has 2,223 active Covid cases. There are 96 patients receiving treatment. Most of them suffer from additional illnesses. According to the ministry, there have been 431 instances reported in the district of Ernakulam, 426 cases in Kottayam, and 365 cases in Thiruvananthapuram.

Every hospital has been directed to perform COVID tests on patients who exhibit symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, or cold. The minister added that directives had been issued to guarantee the supply of oxygen.

This comes after Ms. George presided over a meeting to evaluate the state’s position with the Rapid Response Team’s (RRT) state unit. Because of COVID, the concerned officials have been instructed not to send patients to private hospitals needlessly.

“Avoid making unnecessary hospital visits. Masks should be worn by people who have symptoms such a cold, sore throat, cough, or dyspnea. Hospitals require the use of masks. Periodically wash your hands with soap or hand sanitizer,” the minister continued.

India recorded 6,815 active Covid-19 cases as of Tuesday morning. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) reports that 163 cases of the novel Covid-19 variant XFG have been found nationwide recently.

The formation of the XFG variety represents a natural evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to Balram Bhargava, a former Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He continued by saying that India’s extensive use of rapid molecular diagnostic platforms like Truenat puts the country in a good position to quickly identify and contain new variations.
