Bengaluru Flooded, Delhi on Red Alert: IMD Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave “red alert” for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan today due to the high temperatures. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are expected to persist until June 13 in northwest India, including the western Himalayan area. This suggests that starting on June 14, citizens of these states will be able to escape the intense heat.

In addition, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh are under an orange alert for heatwave conditions. A red signal for heavy rains has been issued for Karnataka and portions of coastal Maharashtra.

The current weather in Delhi

The regional Meteorological Center forecast partly overcast sky with light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds amid Delhi’s rising heat index and red alert for a heatwave. It is anticipated that the highest temperature would be between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius higher than the typical 39.9 degree Celsius.

The heat index soared to 45.5 degrees Celsius the day before, the seventh time this month that temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees.

On Wednesday, the highest recorded temperature in Ganganagar, Rajasthan, was 48 degrees Celsius.

IMD wrote in a post on X that “Heat wave conditions over Northwest India are expected to gradually improve starting on June 14th.” Over the next two to three days, there shouldn’t be any notable changes in the highest temperatures over Northwest and Central India. Following rain, a slow drop in temperature of 2-4°C is anticipated during the next few days.

The absence of thunderstorm activity in recent days has caused temperatures in the area to climb beyond 45°C, according to IMD Scientist Naresh Kumar. Other favorable climatic factors, such the development of an anti-cyclonic circulation across Northwest India, are paired with this weather state.

The current weather in Delhi

According to IMD’s most recent press release, “On the 12th, hot and muggy weather is expected to prevail over Bihar, Assam, and Meghalaya.” On June 12, there is a high probability of warm nighttime temperatures in several areas of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh.

“Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana (June 12–15), with very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu (June 12–17), Kerala & Mahe (June 12–13, Karnataka),” the meteorological department added until June 17.

Additionally, it is anticipated that Kerala will have exceptionally high levels of precipitation from June 14 to June 16, Tamil Nadu from June 14 to June 15, and Goa till June 14.
