India Cyber Fraud Surges

Cyber fraud in India reached ₹22,845 crores in 2024, a 206% increase, and the government has adopted a number of security measures.

In India, cybercrime is on the rise. Data recently made public by the Home Ministry indicates that the number of cyber fraud cases nationwide has skyrocketed in 2024. The amount of money defrauded by cybercrime increased by 206% from Rs 7,465 crore in 2023 to ₹ 22,845 crore in 2024.

Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, informed the Lok Sabha that in 2024, 36.40 lakh financial fraud complaints were filed on the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Compared to the 24.4 lakh cases reported in 2023, this number is significantly higher.

Alarming figures and an increase in crime

The ministry claims that compared to 15.9 lakh in 2023, 22.7 lakh cybercrime complaints were filed in 2024. In other words, cybercrime has increased by 42% in just one year, which is concerning to citizens nationwide.

For many, the government saved money.

To address this issue, the government has taken a number of actions. On the basis of 17.8 lakh complaints, about ₹5,489 crore has been prevented from fraud thus far with the assistance of CFCFRMS.

In addition, the national government has barred 2,63,348 mobile IMEIs and about 9.42 lakh SIM cards based on police reports. In the meantime, 10,599 cybercriminals have been apprehended thus far with the Pratibimb module’s assistance.

How to prevent online fraud

The government and cyber specialists have recommended the following security measures:

-Watch out for dubious calls, emails, and links.

-Make use of 2-factor authentication and create strong passwords.

-Only visit safe websites (https)

-Never give out your personal information.

-Regularly update the software on your computer and mobile devices.

-Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks like banking or login.
