Pitru Paksha 2025: On September 7th, Pitru Paksha will begin. Shradh Karma and Pinddaan are performed for the deceased ancestors during Pitru Paksha. You may wonder why some people do their Shradh even before they pass away.
Pitru Paksha 2025: Pitru Paksha is the time between Pratipada and Amavasya in the month of Ashwin. In Hinduism, the 15 days of Pitru Paksha are regarded as extremely significant. Pitru Paksha will begin this year on September 7 and conclude on September 21 with Sarvapitru Amavasya.
Rituals like as Shradh, Tarpan, and Pinddaan are conducted for the deceased ancestors during Pitru Paksha. It is thought that these ceremonies carried out during Pitru Paksha satisfy the ancestors’ souls, release them from Pitru Dosha, and bring blessings from the ancestors.

Even before you pass away, you can perform Shraddha.
People typically assume that Tarpan and Pinddaan are ceremonies done for their deceased ancestors when they hear their names. Hindus believe that people become ancestors once they die, and that their family members conduct their Shradh in Pitru Paksha. You might be shocked to learn, however, that Shradh is also performed for the living. Before passing away, some people carry out their own Shradh rites. Tell us why, who those persons are, and whether doing Shradh for a living person is permitted by the scriptures.
Does performing a living person’s shraddha follow the scriptures?
Religious writings and the Garuda Purana both state that a person may conduct his own Shraddha during his lifetime in specific situations. ‘Atma Shraddha’ or ‘Jeevit Shraddha’ are examples of this. Such Shraddha guarantees that the individual’s soul has been satiated by his actions prior to death, preventing his soul from having to wander beyond death.

Who is capable of performing Shraddha on their own before passing away?
- For these ancestors who have departed from their bodies, the fundamental Shraddha ceremony is performed. However, the scriptures speak of individuals who are able to accomplish their Shraddha while still living.
- Before they die, sadhus, saints, or ascetics who have accepted sanyaas might do their shraddha. They are released from the bonds of the world and household life after completing shraddha.
- A person can perform his own Shraddha while he is still alive in order for his soul to be saved after he passes away, even if he is the last male member of his tribe or lineage and there are no descendants left in the family.
- However, performing Shraddha while alive is not in accordance with the scriptures for regular householders.
