E-commerce Firms Fined For Cash Delivery Charges

According to Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, the government would implement the required reforms to improve openness in the e-commerce industry and take strong action to safeguard consumer rights.

Complaint Against E-Commerce Platforms: Although e-commerce businesses are becoming more and more well-known in the nation, concerns have also started to surface regarding how these platforms operate. A number of incidents involving customers being charged extra for selecting the cash on delivery (COD) option have come to light in recent months. The government has since adopted a more stringent approach and intensified its investigations into these businesses.

E-commerce sites that charge customers more for cash payment options are being looked into by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi recently called such occurrences “dark patterns”—deceptive strategies that trick customers into paying more—in a tweet.

According to Joshi, the government would implement the required changes to improve openness in the e-commerce industry and take strong action to safeguard consumer rights.

Cash on delivery is subject to handling fees.

The uproar began when a number of consumers posted screenshots on social media that revealed extra fees that certain businesses were charging under the guise of a “payment handling charge.” On the X platform, a lot of users also complained about “rain fees” and other extra costs on apps like Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato.

The government is now taking action on this matter in response to these complaints. “These cases will be thoroughly investigated and strict action will be taken against companies violating consumer rights,” Joshi tweeted on Friday.

The government is working on a new law.

E-commerce businesses have already received warnings from the authorities over unfair consumer behavior. Additionally, new legislation is being developed to stop behaviors such as overcharging and “dark patterns.”

The government wants to guarantee that customers are not duped by hidden fees or deceptive options and that they have total openness when making purchases. Overall, it is anticipated that future online shopping will be more transparent and user-friendly as a result of the government’s crackdown on e-commerce businesses.
