Toyota has introduced the new FJ Cruiser, a powerful off-road SUV. Let’s find out if this car, with its 2.7-liter engine, boxy design, and Land Cruiser-like capabilities, could be the perfect off-roader for India.
Toyota has added a new name (FJ Cruiser) to its renowned off-roader lineup. This SUV will soon be launched in Japan and is specifically designed for those who want the ruggedness of a classic Land Cruiser in a compact size. The new FJ Cruiser is built on the same platform as the Land Cruiser Prado, but is smaller and more practical. Let’s take a look at its features.

Design and Exterior:
- The new Toyota FJ Cruiser is approximately 4.5 meters long, making it a compact off-road SUV. Its boxy silhouette, high ground clearance, and large wheel arches give it a rugged and powerful appearance. While this SUV is smaller than the Land Cruiser Prado, it still feels just as large. Round LED headlights, a wide grille, and black body cladding tie it back to the legacy of the previous FJ Cruiser. Its design fits in well with the Fortuner as a new off-roader. Toyota plans to manufacture it in Thailand, making it available not only in Japan but also in other Asian countries.
Interior:
- The interior of the new FJ Cruiser is inspired by the Land Cruiser, but features a young and adventure-friendly style. The dashboard features two large screens—one for the infotainment system and the other for the driver’s display. More button controls are provided for ease of use during off-road driving. The seats and dashboard are made of sturdy materials, ensuring durability even on tough terrain. The cabin is spacious inside, and Toyota has paid special attention to making it user-friendly.

Engine and performance:
- The new Toyota FJ Cruiser is powered by a 2.7-liter petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox. While the engine size isn’t as large as a full-size SUV, it delivers excellent power and torque for the compact FJ Cruiser. Its 4WD system, short turning radius (compact wheelbase), and excellent ground clearance make it capable on difficult terrain. The company claims this SUV has the same off-road capability as the larger Land Cruiser.
India launch likely:
The new FJ Cruiser is currently being prepared for Japan and other Asian markets, but the company has not yet confirmed its launch in India. However, considering the rapidly growing off-roading enthusiasts and compact SUV market in India, this model is perfect for the youth.
