WhatsApp is by far the most popular messaging app, it is the most widely used. On one hand, where people like its features a lot, there are many frauds too. A new case has come to the fore, which has surprised everyone. A woman in the UK was scammed for about £16,000 (about Rs 15.6 lakh) on WhatsApp. According to a BBC news report, the victim Paula Botton received a text message, which she assumed to be from her daughter, in which she asked her mother to delete the old phone number as she had taken the new number.

WhatsApp scam: what’s the matter
Paula said that her daughter then asked her to do some transactions. She told the BBC, “I agreed to do the transaction because my daughter sent me the payer details and account number.” I assumed it was my daughter, and I thought, well, because of the situation, I was able to do this and I was fooled like that.’ WhatsApp scams are everywhere and hackers are adopting new tactics to dupe innocent users.

Recently, scammers hijacked WhatsApp accounts via phone calls. The scam was exposed by CloudSEk CEO Rahul Sasi. According to cyber experts, the victims get calls from hackers, in which they are instructed to dial numbers starting with ’67’ or ‘405’. Those who follow the instructions get logged out of their account and hackers hijack it.

How to avoid being a victim of a WhatsApp scam?
1. Avoid taking calls from unknown numbers.
2. If you pick up a call from an unknown number, followed by an OTP, do not dial it. Avoid sharing any financial details.
3. One can report a scam directly on WhatsApp by going to Settings-Help and clicking ‘Contact Us’.
