In NEW DELHI: The first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft operated by India’s newest airline, Akasa Air, arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Tuesday after travelling all the way from Seattle in the United States.

The Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed airline claims that the plane’s arrival gets it one step closer to receiving an air operator’s permit (AOP), which is necessary to begin conducting business in the nation.

Vinay Dube, founder, managing director, and chief executive officer of Akasa Air, said: “The arrival of our first aircraft is a very happy moment for all of us and marks an important milestone, bringing us closer to our vision of building India’s greenest, most dependable, and most affordable airline.”

The airline only recently received its first 737 Max aircraft from Boeing in Seattle. With a $9 billion agreement signed in November 2021, Akasa will purchase 72 MAX aircraft from the US-based aircraft manufacturer. The first 18 aircraft will be delivered by March 2023, and the remaining 54 will be delivered over the following four years. The fuel-efficient CFM LEAP B engine will power these aircraft.
