The Indian government had announced its decision to introduce orange passports for the majority of the population. This was to identify persons who have not studied beyond the 10th standard. Unlike regular passports, this orange passport will not have the last page that contains the holder’s father’s name, permanent address, and other important details. Those who are not educationally eligible come under the ECR (Immigration Check Required) category. This means that whenever a person of this category wants to go abroad, he has to fulfill the criteria set by the immigration authorities. But the government had to withdraw this decision three years ago due to heavy opposition from the opposition.

Maroon passports are issued to Indian diplomats and senior government officials. A separate application has to be made for a high-quality passport. Such passport holders become eligible for many benefits during foreign tours. Also, they do not require a visa to fly abroad. Also, maroon passport holders are able to complete immigration formalities much faster than regular people.

The white passport is the most powerful of the different types of passports. Government officials are recipients of white passports. It is issued to persons traveling abroad for official work. The white passport makes it easier for customs and immigration officials to identify the holder as a government official and give due treatment.
