After cash, the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has become the most popular payment method for daily transactions in India, and to make the service more accessible, Shaktikanta Das, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), unveiled a feature phone on Tuesday. UPI has launched 123Pay, a new digital payment mode that, according to him, will enable users of India’s 400 million feature phones to access the payment service.
What is RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das?
Governor Das also announced the launch of a digital payments helpline, dubbed ‘Digi Sathi,’ at a special RBI event. He stated that the ‘excluded people’ of society’s lower strata, particularly in rural areas, would now be able to access UPI services. UPI 123Pay will also help the RBI achieve its goal of a cashless economy. Das went on to say that feature phone users would have fewer payment options.
How will UPI 123Pay function?
Feature phone users will now be able to perform a variety of transactions based on four technical options, according to the RBI. Calling IVR (Interactive Voice Response) numbers, app functionality in feature phones, a missed call-based approach, and proximity sound-based payments are examples of these.
