AMT vs CVT: Buying a car for the first time or planning to switch to an automatic car, know the difference between AMT and CVT. Both automatic transmissions are quite popular in India. Let us know which transmission will be the best option for you.
Simply put, there are basically two types of gears – manual and automatic. Cars with automatic transmission do not have a clutch. You can think of it as an automatic scooter, in which you only drive based on the accelerator and brakes.
This has been one of the major reasons behind the popularity of scooters like the Activa. Even in cars, the automatic transmission gives you a comfortable driving experience. Especially on city roads where bumper-to-bumper traffic is available.
Dual pedal technology is available in automatic cars, one of which is the accelerator and the other is the brake. In such vehicles, the ABC (accelerator, brake, and clutch) of the car is limited to A and B only. However, there are also several types of automatic transmission.
In this, you get AMT, CVT, DCT, torque converter, and other options. AMT and CVT are two popular transmissions in India, which have been in use for a long time. Let us know which transmission is the better option for these two.

AMT (automatic manual transmission)
As the name suggests, the AMT works much like a manual transmission. This is the most economical and fuel-efficient automatic transmission. At present, you do not get any cheaper automatic transmission in India than this.
Due to being cheap, the cost of a car equipped with it is also low. The clutch and gear shift in AMT comes with hydraulic actuators or semi-electronic components.
However, along with its advantages, there are some disadvantages as well. AMT transmission can prove to be jerky at times and ruin your comfort level. This option is very beneficial for first-time or new drivers. This technology is seen in vehicles of Maruti Suzuki, Tata, and Renault.
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
Like the AMT, the CVT is also a popular automatic transmission. In this technique, a pulley or belt is used instead of steel gear. It is clear from the name of Continuous Variable Transmission that you get a very smooth experience in this. In this type of transmission, you get a continuous gear shift depending on the engine speed.
It gives you smooth acceleration and maximum fuel efficiency. This transmission is used in Honda City and Honda Jazz. CVT is slightly more expensive than AMT.
Talking about automatic cars, AMT is cheaper to maintain. Since it is cheap, most people prefer it. Not only this, the cars that come with AMT are cheaper than the CVT cars.
