History
On June 14, Karl Landsteiner’s birthday is commemorated as World Blood Donor Day. The World Health Organization first proposed and created this day on June 14, 2004. (WHO). At the 58th World Health Assembly in May 2005, WHO and its 192 member states launched Blood Donor Day to encourage all countries throughout the world to recognize blood donors for their selfless actions and for saving people’s lives.
Significance
Many countries still lack an appropriate supply of safe blood, and guaranteeing that there is enough and clean blood is quite difficult. The purpose of World Blood Donor Day is to raise awareness about the necessity of blood donation and to thank the many people who donate their blood to save others’ lives.
