LG VK Saxena, in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 73 of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act, 1957, approved the proposal to convene the first meeting of the newly elected corporation on Friday, January 6, 2023. As part of the procedure, the municipal commissioner sent a proposal to the urban development department to seek permission from the lieutenant governor for the first meeting of the newly elected corporation. This will be the first meeting of the 250-member corporation after the integration of the municipal corporation in Delhi.
A proposal was sent by the MCD commissioner to the Urban Development Department on December 12, seeking the approval of the LG to convene the first meeting of the MCD. DE approved the file. After which Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia and CM Arvind Kejriwal approved the proposal on Tuesday. After which, receiving the proposal file on Wednesday itself, it was approved in the evening.
For the first time after the integration of the Municipal Corporation, there will be a meeting of 250 elected members on January 6. In the MCD elections held on December 4, the Aam Aadmi Party won a majority by winning 134 seats, while the BJP has won 104 seats in the MCD for the last 15 consecutive years. Earlier this year, the existing East, North, and South Municipal Corporations in Delhi were merged. After delimitation, the number of wards was reduced from 272 to 250.
