Birth of Bhima
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located on the Sahyadri mountain, about 110 km from Pune in Maharashtra. There is a mythological story behind this Jyotirlinga due to which it was established. According to the legend, Lord Rama along with Lankapati Ravana killed his younger brother Kumbhakarna. After the death of Kumbhakarna, his son Bhima was born.
Strict penance
When Bhima grew up, he came to know about the killing of his father by Lord Rama. Hearing this, he became very angry and vowed to kill Shri Ram. After this, Bhima did severe penance of Brahma ji for many years. Pleased with the penance, Brahmaji gave Bhima the boon of being always victorious.
Warning
After getting the boon, Bhima started creating a ruckus. Gods and gods along with humans started getting scared of him. At last, all the deities approached Lord Shiva in distress and prayed to save him from Bhima. After this Lord Shiva defeated Bhima in the war. After this, all the deities prayed to Lord Shiva to be established at this place in the form of Jyotirlinga. After listening to his prayer, Bholeshankar got established there. This place later became famous as Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga.
