The government is developing a new strategy to lower rice prices. In addition, the government is adopting other measures to restrict Wheat & rice prices. The government has expanded the grain supply in response. In the current marketing season 2022–2023, the government has so far boosted its rice purchases to 5.58 crore tonnes. In addition, the government has given 1.22 crore farmers the minimum support price (MSP) worth Rs 1.7 lakh crore.

On Wednesday, the Food Ministry released this information. Contrarily, more wheat has been purchased thus far in the rabi marketing year 2023–24 (April–March). Than the 188 million tonnes total purchased the previous year. According to the ministry’s statement, the government now has enough food grains in stock thanks to its current purchases of Wheat & rice. There are 57 million tonnes of combined wheat and rice on hand, which is sufficient to meet the nation’s food needs.
According to FCI, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) purchases
wheat and paddy from state organizations under the Price Support Scheme. The mills purchase paddy and turn it into rice. The current Kharif marketing season runs from October to September. It saw a total of 83 million tonnes of paddy procured up until June 19 (55.8 million tonnes in the case of rice).
Production of 13.55 million tonnes of rice
6.26 million tonnes of rice must be purchased by the Centre during the 2022–2023 marketing season. Over 5.75 crore tonnes of rice were purchased by FCI during the 2021–22 marketing season. The third estimate from the agriculture ministry predicts that rice production would reach a record 135.5 million tonnes for the 2022–23 crop year. Up from 129.4 million tonnes the previous year. In the case of wheat, the minimum support price, or roughly Rs 55,680 crore, has been provided to 21,29 lakh farmers.
