Gmail Users Alert

By employing hidden prompts, scammers are abusing Google Gemini AI to attempt to steal Gmail users’ credentials.

You should take note of this news if you use Gmail. Scammers are abusing the Google Gemini AI technology in a new Gmail scam, according to cyber security experts. This risky scam aims to steal customers’ Gmail account information and passwords.

What is the Gemini scam on Gmail?

An AI technology called Google’s Gemini can be integrated through a sidebar into programs like Gmail. Although it helps users create intelligent responses, updates calendars, and summarizes emails, hackers are now using this tool to trick users.

Scammers include hidden prompts (AI instructions) in emails that are not visible, claims cyber security expert Marco Figueroa. To keep these prompts out of the user’s line of sight, they are embedded into the email using HTML and CSS in a white color with a zero font size.

The AI technology analyzes these concealed instructions and creates a phony warning when the user opens such an email and requests that Gemini write a summary. This alert claims that your Gmail account has been compromised and provides a phony customer service number. The scammers can fool the user into disclosing private account information if he phones that number.

How can I avoid this Gmail scam that utilizes AI?

  • Some crucial advice from security professionals will help shield you from these types of scams:
  • Never click on links in emails you don’t recognize.
  • Always carefully check the URL of the website. https://mail.google.com is the actual Gmail URL.
  • Use “Report phishing” to report any emails that seem suspicious right away.
  • Continue to change your Gmail password periodically.
  • Using two-factor authentication (2FA) doubles your account’s security.

Approximately 1.8 billion Gmail users are in danger.

Given that Gmail has over 1.8 billion active users globally, the consequences of such a scam may be enormous. Although Google has been made aware of this, user vigilance remains the most effective weapon until the security upgrades are fully applied.
