The manufacturing industry in India has had great growth in the past year, according to the Government of India’s Annual Industry Survey 2023-24, which was issued by MoSPI.

Significant growth in employment

The overall number of jobs in industrial sectors increased by 5.9 percent in 2023–2024. This sum has already risen to over 1.9 crores, up from 1.8 crores last year, or in 2022–2023. This suggests that fresh job possibilities are being created and that industry recovery is speeding up. Over 57 lakh new jobs have been created in the last ten years, from 2014–15 to 2023–24. This is a significant step towards increasing India’s employment and economic power. However, there has been a significant shift in the industrial sector with regard to investment as well as employment. In 2023–24, the total amount invested was Rs 68 lakh crore, a significant increase above the Rs 61 lakh crore invested in 2022–23. This capital investment signifies advancements in technology and the beginning of new industry initiatives.

Which industries had a boom in employment?

The majority of workers are employed in a few specialized manufacturing sectors. The first is the industry of food items. It became the largest employer, employing 21.67 lakh people, accounting for 11.1 percent of all employment. This sector has 16 percent of all factories, the most of any industry. This is followed by the textile sector. With a proportion of 8.8%, it is the second largest employer, employing 17.14 lakh people. Aside from this, the basic metal industry offered bumper jobs. It employs 15.23 lakh people. With a 7.8% employment share, it ranks third. Also, the manufacturing of cars and trailers employs over 13.74 lakh people. 13.39 lakh individuals were employed in the clothing business at the same time.

Which states have the highest employment rates?

Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are among the top five states in terms of employment, according to the ASI study. These states have had varying employment shares. Tamil Nadu has 15 percent, Gujarat 13 percent, Maharashtra 13 percent, Uttar Pradesh 8 percent, Karnataka 6 percent, and the remaining 45 percent is the total of all the states. This further demonstrates that South and West India are in the forefront of employment and industry expansion.
