Halahal Vish

Halahal Vish: By consuming the poison Halahal that emerged during the ocean’s churning, Shiva shielded the entire cosmos. However, did you know that Shiva never fully ingested the poison? Understand the myth.

Mythology surrounding Shiva’s halahal poison: As everyone knows, when the ocean was churning, an extremely lethal halahal poison emerged, which Shiva swallowed to keep the gods and demons safe. However, a lot of people might not be aware that he partially swallowed the poison. He held it in his throat instead.

He was given the name Neelkanth as a result of his throat turning midnight blue. The question now is, however, why Lord Shiva did not swallow it. Why did Shiva don the poison Halahal, which could have set the entire galaxy on fire?

The response was provided by Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya Shivanand Lahiri:

According to Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya Shivanand Lahiri’s response to this issue in Shloka 31, Lord Shiva retained the poison in his throat rather than ingesting it since his stomach contains all of the planets, which would have been annihilated if he had swallowed the Halahal poison.

The universe would have been wiped out in an instant if the poison had gotten into his stomach. Some of these items, which describe the mysteries and miracles, have also been described in the Shiva Purana.

What are the myths telling us?

Mythology states that Shukracharya, the demons’ guru, once became lodged in Shiva’s stomach. Then he noticed that Bhaargava was searching for an escape like empty air while he was inside Shiva’s womb. Shiva glimpsed the netherworld and the Sal Loka in his stomach. He witnessed the battle between the Pramathas and the Asuras, as well as the Vidhi Lokas of Indra, Aditya, and the Devis.

Now consider the destruction of the entire universe if Shiva had permitted the poison to enter his stomach. Then Mahadev did what only he could do: he held the poison in his throat while experiencing excruciating agony and burning. Shiva turned into a barrier separating life and death.

This Shiva narrative explains Shiva’s actual shape in addition to being a story. Shiva is both the killer of ego and the guardian of the cosmos. All living things are protected by Shiva. For this reason, he is also affectionately known as Bholenath.
