GST Cut Benefits Under Scrutiny, Government Receives Complaints

Since the introduction of GST 2.0, the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has received hundreds of complaints about it, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare told reporters on Monday, October 29. Reporters were told by Nidhi Khare that “the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has received about 3,000 complaints since the GST amendments. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, or CBIC, is receiving the complaints and will take appropriate action.

Khare provided additional details, stating that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs is closely monitoring any instances in which consumers are being defrauded and false information is being disseminated in order to prevent them from benefiting from lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates.

According to Khare, the government is processing these complaints accurately by utilizing chatbots and artificial intelligence. He continued by saying that the government must bolster its oversight mechanism since shops are failing to pass on the advantages of lower GST rates to customers.

Many household items that were formerly in the 12% tax rate have been transferred to the 5% tax slab as a result of the GST reform. The cost of commonplace things has decreased as a result. Dairy goods, toothpaste, shampoo, detergent, and infant supplies have all decreased in price. Cigarettes, tobacco, and sin products have also been subject to a 40% tax. Additionally, the 18% GST on health and life insurance has been removed.
