Tata Nexon EV MAX price slashed, range increased to compete with Mahindra XUV400

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tata Motors has given the Tata Nexon EV Prime and Nexon EV MAX a substantial price cut
  • The Nexon EV MAX top-end variant now carries a price tag of Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom) putting it at par with the XUV400
  • The Nexon EV MAX will also benefit from 16km more range thanks to a new software update

Two days after Mahindra announced the prices of its first electric car, the XUV400, Tata Motors announced a price cut for the Tata Nexon EV Prime and the Tata Nexon EV MAX. The top-spec Tata Nexon MAX XZ+ Lux variant is now Rs 85,000 more affordable, thus bringing it to par with the top-spec Mahindra XUV400 EL variant.

While the Mahindra XUV400 starts at Rs 15.59 lakh (ex-showroom), the Nexon EV will now start at Rs 14.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Tata Motors has also rolled out a new software update that boosts the range of the Tata Nexon MAX to 453km, which is similar to the XUV400’s claimed range of 456km.

Tata Nexon EV price more affordable across the range

The base Tata Nexon EV Prime has become up to Rs 50,000 more accessible, making it a full Rs 1.5 lakh more affordable than the base Mahindra XUV400. The entire Tata Nexon EV MAX lineup has seen a huge price discount of Rs 85,000. This price change comes courtesy the Indian government’s Production-Linked-Incentives (PLI) scheme that subsidizes EV manufacturing in the country. Moreover, the price cut comes days after the prices of the Mahindra XUV400 EV SUV were revealed, which is a key competitor to the Tata Nexon EV.

VARIANT OLD PRICE NEW PRICE CHANGE

Tata Nexon EV Prime prices start at Rs 14.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base XM trim and go up to Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the XZ+ Lux trim. Prices for the higher range Tata Nexon EV Max now start at Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base XM trim which is a new addition to the lineup. Prices for the Nexon EV MAX go up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the XZ+ Lux variant with a 7.2kW charger.

The reshuffle in the price list comes as the Tata Nexon EV faces its first real competition from the Mahindra XUV400 EV SUV, a closely followed compact SUV from its rival Indian automotive giant. After holding a majority market share in the electric passenger vehicle market for a long time, Tata Motors has so far enjoyed a monopoly in the Indian market.

Tata Nexon EV MAX range bump

The Tata Nexon EV MAX has also received new software and benefits from an additional 16km of a range which now brings the claimed range figure to 453km. This again can be attributed to the advent of the XUV400 which boasts of 456km range on the test cycle. The new software update is backward compatible, which means that existing Tata Nexon EV Max customers will be able to enjoy the extra range from February 15, as Tata is rolling out the new software for the older vehicles. The vanilla Tata Nexon EV Prime with a smaller 30.2kWh battery has the same range at 312km.
