First Google Pixel 7 leak has arrived: 2nd Gen Tensor chip, launch timeline, and more

The first batch of Google Pixel 7 leaks have surfaced. According to recent reports, Google is hard at work with its 2nd Gen Tensor chipset. The chipset will equip the upcoming Google Pixel 7 series with Samsung 5300 Exynos modem for connectivity. The codenames for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will be Cheetah and Panther respectively. To recall, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are powered by the Tensor GS101 chipset and are codenamed “Oriole” and “Raven”. According to a report by 9to5Google, a Tensor processor with model number GS201 with the codename “Cloudripper” is being tested.

Along with Clouddripper, three more codenamed Exynos are associated with modems. First, let’s talk about two of them – Cheetah and Panther, which are believed to be the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Now, Pixel devices always have a codename related to fish or other marine life. Starting with the first Pixel smartphone – from Sailfish to the last Pixel smartphone codenamed Marine Life – the Pixel 5 with Redfin. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were codenamed Oriole and Raven. After the Pixel 6a with BlueJ and the Pixel Notepad with Pipit, these are all bird names.

With the Pixel 7 series, the company is changing its codename scheme to animal names, suggesting that each generation of Pixel phones will have new codename schemes. Now coming back to the third codename associated with the Exynos modem – “Ravenclaw.” At First, It Sounds Like a Hogwarts House Reference, But Things Could Have Been Different

Now, the first Tensor chipset that replaced the Snapdragon 765 SoC on the Pixel 5 device for testing purposes was codenamed “Whitefin”. Codenamed Tender was a mashup of the chipset – Finn from Whitechapel and the Pixel 5’s Redfin. Similarly, the Ravenclaw could be the Raven from the Pixel 6 Pro, and the claw is just a feline reference to the Pixel 7.

Separately, the Google Pixel foldable smartphone is in the works and could hit production in Q3 2022 and debut alongside the Google Pixel 7 series in Q4 2022. If you are curious about the Google Pixel foldable phone, then skip to our previous coverage for the same.
