MG Motor is known to bring frequent updates to its existing portfolio. This has helped MG establish itself as one of the industry leaders in terms of creature comfort features. As a strategy to keep its portfolio fresh, MG has now launched the 2022 Gloster, which it calls the Advanced Gloster. The price of the base trim starts at Rs 31.99 Lakh, which is INR 50K more than the outgoing model.
Gloster is the flagship SUV from MG Motor India – It rivals the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Jeep Meridian
Technically, this is a mid-life update of MG’s flagship offering. The changes are mostly cosmetic, along with the inclusion of some additional features. The body-on-frame chassis and drivetrain of the Gloster haven’t undergone any significant modifications.
2022 MG Gloster – Key Features
Aesthetically, the updates are majorly limited to the introduction of new alloy wheels for the 2022 Gloster. The vehicle now has brand-new 19-inch alloy wheels with a dual spoke design (available only on the 4WD variant). Additionally, MG has introduced an additional paint option for the Gloster, called Deep Golden. Earlier, the Gloster was offered in only 4 color options, namely Metal Black, Warm White, Metal Ash, and Agate Red. It seems that the Agate Red color option has been removed from the offer.
The addition of additional i-Smart functions is one of the 2022 Gloster’s standout characteristics. The SUV includes over 75 connected car capabilities, according to MG. To better connect with Indian customers, MG has also introduced 35+ Hinglish voice commands, in addition to the nearly 100 odd voice commands that were already there.
To add to Gloster’s ADAS suite, MG has now added a few additional features. These include Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Door Open Warning (DOW), all of which are segment-first. It should be noted that in the past MG’s i-Smart app was only available to Apple Watch users. The i-Smart software will, however, also be accessible to owners of Android Watch devices starting with the 2022 update.
Another interesting new feature is the advanced navigation package from Map My India. On the navigation screen, the navigation suite now displays real-time weather updates and even AQI data.
Gloster’s new ‘Discover App’ aims to personalize and simplify customer search results for restaurants, hotels and more. The addition of the Park+ Head Unit application will enable customers to pre-book and pre-pay for parking slots. This will help them to avoid the lengthy parking that comes up at many places in metro cities.
Powertrain and Trims
MG has not made any changes to the powertrain of the Gloster. It continues to draw power from a turbocharged 2-liter diesel motor that is offered in 2 different states of the mind. These include a 163 hp version and a more powerful 218 hp iteration (with a twin-turbo setup). Power is delivered to the rear wheels as standard, while customers can opt for a 4×4 AWD (all-wheel drive) configuration by paying some extra cash. An 8-speed automatic gearbox takes care of the transmission duties in all the different powertrain configurations.
The Gloster’s rivalry includes full-size SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra Alturas G4. Thanks to its price tag, it will also compete with some of the recently launched models such as the Jeep Meridian and the Hyundai Tucson. Other competitors include the Skoda Kodiaq and the upcoming facelifted Citroen C5 Aircross.
