After scoring more than 270 runs in the 2024 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came dangerously close to losing twice in less than three weeks, but they prevailed both times as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) eventually ran out of steam while trying to chase down a record 288 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was an extreme running festival. A record 549 runs were scored in the IPL 2024. And it’s rare to see a team get 262 runs and still lose. However, Dinesh Karthik’s 35-ball 83 kept going, didn’t give up, and eventually made sure that RCB didn’t lose much on the NRR.
Pursuing 288 runs, RCB was forced to proceed with the first ball,
as both Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli did what was required. A 79-run powerplay, higher than that of Sunrisers Hyderabad, was a good start. However, in a game where the required rate is around 15. It was still not enough and a wicket and just five runs in the next over from Mayank Markande was just what the doctor ordered for SRH but not for RCB.

For RCB,
losing Will Jacks in the following over was a “it never rains but pours” moment since they relied on the English all-rounder to provide the middle-order blow. After reaching his 50th birthday, Du Plessis continued to labor, but he received no assistance from anyone. Regardless of what Karthik did later in the innings, Markande’s removal of Rajat Patidar signaled the start of the innings’ pivot.
