Drone Regulations in India:
Drone operations in India are regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). In 2021, the government implemented the “Drone Rules 2021,” which aim to ensure safe and transparent drone use. According to these rules, every drone must be registered on the DGCA’s Digital Sky Platform before flying. Flying an unregistered drone is considered illegal.
Drone Categories in India:
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has divided drones into five categories based on weight:
Nano Drones (up to 250 grams). These generally do not require a license, but they are also prohibited from flying in no-fly zones.
Micro drones: can be used for recreational purposes or small-scale photography, but permits are required to fly them.
Small Drone, Medium Drone, and Large Drone. A Remote Pilot License (RPL) is required to fly drones in these three categories.
Restrictions on Drone Flying:
There are strict restrictions on flying drones in certain areas. Flying drones is prohibited in no-fly zones, such as airports, military areas, government buildings, governors’ or presidential residences. Flying drones at night without permission is prohibited. Permission is required before flying a drone over private property or over a crowd of people.
Training and Licensing for Commercial Use:
If you are over 18 and want to use a drone commercially, you must undergo training and pass an exam at a DGCA-accredited Drone Training Organization (DTO). Only then will you be issued a Remote Pilot License (RPL).
Penalties for Illegal Drone Use:
Anyone caught flying a drone without permission can face legal action, including a fine of between ₹25,000 and ₹5 lakh, and in some cases, even the drone can be confiscated.
