The car has been locally designed and developed by engineers from Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Suzuki.

The Wagon R flex fuel prototype gets an advanced engine specially designed for ethanol-blended petrol. New fuel system technology has been built in to make the engine compatible with ethanol blends (E20-E85), a heated fuel rail for cold start assist, and an ethanol sensor to detect ethanol percentage. Other mechanical parts, such as an updated fuel pump and fuel injectors, have also been designed and updated while keeping in mind the durability of the car and its engine.
