Rs 5 lakh lost from the account after looking for IRCTC customer care on Google!

People continue to become the victims of IRCTC cybercriminals in novel ways. Because of this, you should exercise caution when conducting any online searches. A specific amount of caution must be exercised when searching for information about customer service or helpline numbers on Google. Such an IRCTC fraud affected a girl from Noida, causing the withdrawal of Rs 5 lakh from her account in only 10 minutes and the approval of a personal loan of Rs 3 lakh in just 5 minutes.

A resident of Noida named Janukish claims that she

had purchased an IRCTC ticket to travel to Delhi but she had to cancel it because the train was running late. She claims that after canceling the ticket, she printed out Google’s customer service number to get a refund. But, this number was a scam. Janukish dialed that number and received a message saying his call was being forwarded to the refund team. Where it is said that they must click a link to file a complaint.

According to Janukish, the moment the user opened the link,

an app was automatically installed on the mobile device, which led to a hack of the complete device. After that, I went to my net banking and used my mobile number to sign in to my account,’ she said. The hacker could see the OTPs that were being sent to me. Janukish claims that a personal loan of Rs 3 lakh was obtained while the full amount of Rs 5 lakh vanished from his account. Also, she reported the incident to the police.

Never look up a bank’s helpline number or a company’s

“Customer Care” number on Google. Avoid using Google for searches since the phone numbers displayed on the first result could be those of online criminals. If you called that number in this case without first checking, be aware that you could be a victim of online fraud. Some actually think that searching on Google is the simplest approach to finding the helpline number. That’s why this caught the attention of cyber terrorists, and a fresh method of cheating was developed.

What to do:

Whenever you look up a company’s helpline or customer service number on Google, double-check the information. It is preferable to go straight to the company or bank’s website to seek their helpline number. Don’t give out such information if you receive a call asking for bank-related information.
