In the T20 format, strong opener Rohit Sharma doesn’t seem to have much time left. The news that Rohit will never be seen competing in this format at the international level may surprise fans of the Indian legend. Before the 2023 ODI World Cup officially began, Rohit had already talked about his future in the shorter format, according to sources within the BCCI.
Possibility in International T20
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India in both Tests and ODIs, is unlikely to participate in T20 Internationals going forward. Before the 50-over World Cup (ODI World Cup-2023) even began, Rohit had talked about his future in the game’s most condensed version. Sources from the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) provided this data. Rohit hasn’t participated in a single T20 World Cup match since India’s elimination in November 2022. Since then, Hardik Pandya has primarily assumed leadership of the Indian squad. In his 148 T20 international games thus far, Rohit has amassed 3853 runs at a strike rate of about 140, including four centuries.
They had a conversation with Agarkar.
Speaking under anonymity, a top BCCI source stated, “This is nothing new.” For the past year, Rohit has not participated in a T20 International match because he was concentrating on the ODI World Cup. In this context, he also had a lengthy conversation with Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. Even Rohit himself stated that he wanted to avoid T20 International. Rohit alone made the decision to do this.
4 other openers
India has four openers in addition to Rohit: Shubhman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Rituraj Gaikwad. All four have had strong IPL seasons. Rohit may be asked to rethink his choice by the selectors or BCCI executives if the younger players are unable to perform adequately. It is recognized that at this point in his career, Rohit wants to control his workload to prevent injuries in the future. As a result, he will not be able to participate in the IPL in all three formats simultaneously. Instead, the Indian skipper will mostly concentrate on the longer format as seven Test matches are scheduled to be played between December 2023 and March 2024.
