In the first One-Day International (ODI) of the series, India defeated South Africa by 8 runs at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. In this three-match series, Team India, led by wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Rahul’s two-year-old ‘wound’ turned green after this.
Arshdeep emerged as the game’s MVP.
In the first ODI of the series against South Africa, India’s youthful fast bowlers Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh caused a disturbance in Johannesburg by taking nine wickets between them (India-South Africa 1st ODI). The hosts’ innings were cut down to just 116 runs in 27.3 overs as a result. The Indian team then lost two wickets in 16.4 overs with the help of half-centuries from debutant Sai Sudarshan (55 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (52). Arshdeep was chosen player of the match.
Rahul recalls the ‘pain’ of two years old.
The fact that he had finally triumphed as captain on South African territory pleased Captain KL Rahul. With this, he made history as the first Indian skipper to win a Pink ODI. In actuality, the players from South Africa had traveled to play in this match wearing pink jerseys to raise awareness of breast cancer. In the 2021–22 series, Rahul led India in one Test and three ODIs, all of which ended in defeat for the squad.
What was said by Rahul?
“Last time I played three ODIs against South Africa as captain and lost all three,” said Rahul, the skipper of the ODI series. It feels fantastic to win in South Africa right now. Although Rahul had anticipated using the spinners to launch an early attack, the fast bowlers outperformed him. “We planned to get the spinners into the game early, but the fast bowlers bowled well and the wicket helped a lot in the beginning,” he stated.
