The cancellation of Vistara Airlines flights and high customer demand have already resulted in a 20–25% increase in airfare. Experts claim that there is a significant demand for air travel every year during the summer season, but this year the aviation industry is facing many challenges in increasing the capacity as per the demand. It is even using larger aircraft on domestic routes. During this period, airfares have already increased due to the cancellation of more than a hundred flights of Tata Group’s Vistara airline.
In response to the pilots’ ire,
the airline lowered its daily overall capacity by 25–30 flights or 10 percent. According to a study by the travel company Ixigo, prices on some airlines increased by up to 39% between April 1 and April 7 in comparison to March 1 through April 7. During this time, the one-way fares for flights from Delhi to Bengaluru jumped by 39%, while the fares for flights from Delhi to Srinagar grew by 30%. Based on the data, there was a 12% fare rise for flights from Delhi to Mumbai and an 8% fare increase for flights from Mumbai to Delhi.
The current summer flight schedule,
which covers both domestic and international routes, is projected to see average cost increases of 20–25%, according to Bharat Malik, senior vice president (plane and hotel business) at travel portal Yatra Online. According to Malik, the 10% flight reduction announced by Vistara has had an impact on the cost of tickets for popular domestic routes. The cost of travel has increased significantly. Major routes like Delhi-Goa, Delhi-Kochi, Delhi-Jammu, and Delhi-Srinagar now have prices that are 20–25 percent higher.
According to him,
a primary cause of the high cost of travel is Vistara’s reduction in flight operations. Aside from this, growing summer travel demand and rising fuel prices have also contributed to pricing increases. Senior Director and founder Jagan Narayan Padmanabhan global head (of transport and logistics) at CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics, said fares are expected to increase by seven percent as the peak season approaches. Most of the travels will be for personal reasons and with family, so it is expected to have a substantial impact. In such a situation, people can choose the option of rail travel for short distances.
